Shedding the Old, Embracing the Bold: 7 Habits to Drop From 2023
Ditching the deadweight for an incredible 2024.
Have you ever felt like you’re carrying around a backpack full of bricks?
And each brick is a bad habit or negative thought you can’t seem to shake?
I sure have.
In 2023, that backpack was chock-full of people-pleasing, toxic relationships, self-doubt — you name it.
But not this year. My 2024 is about setting those bricks down and sprinting towards greatness.
And guess what? You’re coming with me.
1. Goodbye, People-Pleasing!
It hit me recently while I was juggling work calls, baking a cake for a friend’s birthday, and simultaneously helping my neighbor fix their Wi-Fi — all on the same afternoon.
As I flopped down on the couch that evening, utterly spent, it dawned on me: I’m no superhero, and trying to be one for everyone else’s sake was burning me out.
That’s when I decided: In 2024, it’s about setting boundaries. It’s about saying “no” to the non-stop hustle to keep others happy and “yes” to more me-time. And let me tell you, it’s as if I’ve discovered a new place to be — joy.
Tip: Start small. Say “no” to something minor and work your way up. It’s like muscle training for your willpower.
2. Cutting Out Toxic Relationships
I had this friend — let’s call them “Friend X.” Every hangout left me more drained than a three-year-old’s battery-powered toy.
When I realized that being alone was better than being with Friend X, it was a no-brainer.
This year is about surrounding myself with positivity radiators, not energy vampires.
Tip: Evaluate your circle. If someone doesn’t cheer you on or lift you up, it might be time to socially declutter.
3. Self-Doubt, Be Gone!
2023 me was like a shaky-legged fawn, doubting every move.
But not anymore. I’ve seen what I can do when I push past the doubt. It’s like the sun breaking through clouds — everything’s brighter and warmer.
This year, self-doubt has no seat at my table.
Tip: Affirmations are your friend. Look in the mirror every morning and remind yourself, “I’ve got this.”
4. Others’ Opinions? Not My Business
I used to collect opinions like they were going out of style.
But here’s the deal: They’re not my size, they don’t suit me, and honestly, they’re last season’s fashion.
This year, I’m strutting to the beat of my drum, wearing confidence like a tailored suit.
Tip: Write down your values and goals. When someone’s opinion doesn’t align, let it slide off like water on a duck’s back.
5. Starting Line Jitters? I’m Jumping In!
I used to have a whole list of excuses that kept me on the starting block — like a runner with lead shoes.
But every race, even a marathon, begins with a simple step.
So this year, I’m shaking off those heavy shoes and sprinting forward, even if my first step lands in a puddle. Hey, it’s still a splash in the right direction!
Tip: Set a timer for 5 minutes and just start. Once you’re in motion, it’s easier to stay in motion.
6. Fear of Failure? Pfft, More Like Fuel
Ah, the fear of failure, my old frenemy.
It used to paralyze me.
But here’s the truth, I’ve learned that failure is just a stepping stone disguised as a stumbling block. This year, I’m using it as fuel to rocket myself to new heights.
Tip: Embrace the oops. Every time you stumble, write down what you learned. Soon, you’ll have a book of wisdom.
7. Kicking Comparison to the Curb!
Here’s the extra brick in the backpack I’m setting down this year — comparison.
Oh boy, 2023 was like living in a never-ending Instagram scroll, where everyone’s life was a highlight reel except mine.
I’d compare my behind-the-scenes with everyone’s blockbuster moments. But I’ve realized that the only person I should compare myself to is past me.
Tip: Create a “win log.” Every time you achieve something, big or small, jot it down. Over time, you’ll have a personal highlight reel to rival any social media feed.
Making 2024 Our Year
So, here’s to making 2024 the year we drop the baggage.
It’s the year you and I take on some serious altitude.
Let’s turn those ‘leaves’ into ‘trees’ of wisdom, strength, and growth. And remember, it’s not about perfection; it’s about progress.
Here’s to us, to new beginnings, and to the greatness we’re stepping into!
As for the personal tale to kick things off?
Last year I caught myself overthinking every decision, big or small, like choosing a Netflix show as if it were a life-altering decision.
But this year, my goal is simple: don’t overthink, just do.
Join me, and let’s make 2024 the year we look back on as the start of everything amazing.
