Start-ups! Why You Need the Awesome Yet Simple Power of "Message House"
The Mogul Message Newsletter 18 May: Why Consistent Messaging is Key for Startup Success
Hi there!
First of all, I hope everyone's well and I'd like to apologize for not getting my subscribers and newsletter sometime.
Anyhow, the family issues holding me back I've been resolved.
So, I'm back!
In this issue, I'm going to share some thoughts on messaging in relation relation to your story.
I hope you enjoy it.
I was recently listening to an incredible podcast (The CMO Podcast - Highly recommended)
The guest was Shane Murphy-Reuter, the Chief Marketing Officer of Webflow.
He chatted about his "message house" framework.
Damn, it really struck a chord with me, especially when it comes to the crucial goal of storytelling for startups.
Jim asks, "And I think you call it a message house if I'm not mistaken. So I want you to start very fundamental with that. You're a pretty experienced guy. Why is that so important for you? What have you learned along the road that has led you to have such a conviction that this is at the top of your list?"
Shane then shared a story from his early days at Orange. "Yeah, maybe I'll go all the way back to when I started at Orange, when we talked about the start of this. And this is maybe a slightly different example, but I'll never forget at Orange, as one year in, we were at Chelsea Football Club.
They just won the Premier League for the first time, the soccer Premier League. And around the billboards, Orange just put 'champions' in black background with an Orange Helvetica and no logo, just that. And everyone knew it was Orange.
And while that's in a brand identity discipline, not necessarily story, which I think we'll talk about in a second, it really struck me about how important, and particularly for smaller companies like we are, that if you think about momentum of message and cut through, it's just like singing."
What I want you take away from this is the power of a cohesive and consistent message.
And I shout this from the mountain top! For startups, building a strong brand identity and maintaining a clear, unified message is vital.
The “message house” framework helps achieve this.
How?
You need to ensure all of your communications are aligned and resonate with your audience.
By focusing on a few key messages and reinforcing them consistently across all platforms, startups can create a strong brand presence.
The result I assure you will be just like the "champions" billboard by Orange.
Shane’s insights have reinforced my belief in the importance of a clear and consistent message for startups.
The message house framework is not just a strategy; it’s a foundational element for effective storytelling and brand building.
If you’re looking to elevate your startup’s story, consider building your own message house.
It might just be the key to your success.
In future posts, sharing some more tips and setting up your “message house”.
