You Don’t Need to Know Everything to Start
The Mogul Message Newsletter 13 July: Embracing the unknown is the only way to get started with something new.
Hi everyone!
I've had a good week.
To start, I've been reading more on Substack. I must say, what I'm reading is wow. Compared to other platforms, Substack gets my vote for writing quality, depth of topics, and engagement. I'll share my favorite reads at the end of this newsletter.
Also, I have managed to catch up with several friends, which is always nice. Technology these days makes this a breeze. Anyhow, one of my conversations brought me to the topic of this week's newsletter.
And that is starting something new. I have a friend going through a difficult divorce. She's facing tough custody battles, financial struggles, and the daunting prospect of starting again from scratch anew. I'm writing this post to prepare for my next chat with her.
Ok, let's get on with it.
Starting something new can be overwhelming, especially when we feel we need to know it all.
Believe me, I know! My doubts have grown over the years.
I read more, and apparently know more, but still mustering up confidence is hard. Over the years, I’ve also watched even my closest buddies' anxiety become intense as hell.
It’s easy to believe that beginning anything new requires intense preparation and knowledge.
Especially in today’s world, there are experts in every field. Don’t you feel that you are constantly reminded of that when you scroll through X or even here?
To me, all these experts are like encyclopedias!
So is all this extensive knowledge necessary to start something new? Fortunately, that isn’t the case at all.
Starting—one of the simplest and most accessible forms of action—is considered by many to be incredibly beneficial for growth, whether in business or personal endeavors.
Not because it’s the most informed, most prepared action out there, obviously it is not, but because nearly anyone can just start and get the ball rolling.
Why You Should Start Without Knowing Everything.
So without further ado, here are four reasons to start something new without needing to know everything.
1. Starting offers peace of mind.
Starting is a great example of a low-pressure action because it doesn't overwhelm you with information or expectations.
Sure, there are challenges, but they don’t overwhelm the process.
This is because starting focuses on taking the first step and learning as you go.
Learning, adapting, and growing in the process creates a dynamic environment, which can be incredibly beneficial when starting a business or for personal development.
Starting is an excellent choice if you are aware that you are more likely to get stuck in analysis paralysis (something I’ll talk about at a later date).
2. You need minimal knowledge to start (and it’s relatively easy to learn on the go).
How fantastic is it that all you need to start is a simple plan? You can immerse yourself in the experience at any time, anywhere, as long as you have a willingness to learn (and of course, some curiosity!).
Starting doesn't require extensive knowledge or high expertise. And, no need for detailed guides too, true!
One thing that is an advantage is that you can adjust your approach as you learn. No need for perfect execution right from the start.
I find that starting involves looking forward to new experiences and managing expectations.
Also, from what I can tell you from my experience, the journey itself promotes a healthy and adaptive mindset.
3. You will be safe starting something new.
Any new endeavor you begin requires you to do it with the proper mindset, for sure. It can be the difference between you enjoying the process or facing frustration.
We naturally feel secure in knowing we can learn along the way. One thing I am certain of is as long as you keep an open mind, you should be OK. I’d say that the only exception is if you have specific risk concerns like living off your last paycheck.
That being said, always consider a backup plan and some support. Truth be told, unless you neglect basic precautions, starting something new carries a relatively low risk of failure.
4. Own your experience and be consistent.
Starting is something you'll almost always be able to do, regardless of your initial knowledge level. Unless you’re in a very rigid mindset, you can enjoy the learning experience.
So you can avoid burnout, watch your heart and mind, and manage your pace. Be accountable for the experience, the journey.
You want to try to be in a place where your experience can be positive. What I am suggesting is to be selective with your learning activities but take it a step at a time.
As I am planning to start a new project, I’ll be looking into some resources, connecting with mentors, and embracing the learning curve. Of course, some trial and error will be on the cards to refine my approach.
I always recommend that, when beginning something new, consistency in your efforts is crucial. The most important thing for us is to enjoy the experiences fully and not feel overwhelmed instead of being inspired.
Always embrace the unknown.
I hope that I have conveyed the importance of starting without needing to know everything.
If you are worried about the unknown being daunting, then sometimes the best way to cope is to take a step back. Doing so can give you a bird's eye view of where you are headed and assess your progress.
I’m confident that one can get lost in the process and the time will fly by.
Oh, right, what to prepare for starting something new? Be as ready as possible, relative to your goals. I’m keeping it flexible!
If you choose to start something new (or anything for that matter), I wish you much joy in your journey. Also, I hope that you get so carried away by your experiences and your journey.
Besides, we never know what will happen tomorrow, it’s unknown. So embrace it, just start whatever it is you want to do, and watch yourself grow like never before.
